About Bernedoodles

Whether you live in California like us, or anywhere around the country, Bernedoodles are the perfect fit for any lifestyle.

Why choose a Bernedoodle?

Bernedoodles are a mix between a Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle. They are known for taking on the best traits of each breed: the easy going and goofy nature of the Bernese and the intelligence of the Poodle. We love Bernedoodles because they are great at matching your energy. Whether you love to train for marathons or need a reading buddy for your toddler, the Bernedoodle is ready to be by your side.

What Size is a Bernedoodle?

Just as there are several sizes of Poodles, Bernedoodles come in three different sizes:

  • Standard: 50lbs +

  • Miniature: 25lbs - 49 lbs

  • Toy: 10lbs - 24 lbs

Sometimes breeders will refer to a dog in between the toy and miniature size range as micro-mini, currently this is the size Bernedoodles we breed, they are expected to be between 15-30 pounds fully grown.

Understanding the Different Generations of Doodles

There are 3 major classifications of doodles that you’ll see us refer to at West Coast Doodles, each is a code for the mixture of Bernese Mountain dog to Poodle

F1 Bernedoodles

An F1 bernedoodle is a first generation doodle. This occurs when you breed a pure bred Bernese Mountain dog to a pure bred Poodle. The result is a dog that is 50% Bernese Mountain dog and 50% Poodle. Out of the three generations, this pairing has the greatest chance for shedding and to set off allergies.

F1b Bernedoodles

An F1b is when you breed an F1 back to a pure bred. In our program, that means breeding an F1 Bernedoodle to a pure bred Poodle. These puppies will be 75% Poodle and 25% Bernese Mountain Dog. These pups still have that goofy Bernese personality, but have more predictable low to no shedding, allergy friendly coats.

Multigen Bernedoodles

A multigen Bernedoodle is when both parents are bernedoodles. In our program, we breed a male and female F1b Bernedoodle. The temperament and coats are predictable just like the F1b Bernedoodles. They also benefit from having a more diverse genetic makeup, which generally leads to more resilient and healthy dogs.

Are Bernedoodles a Low Maintenance Dog?

While Bernedoodles are a great family dog, they are not a low maintenance dog. Like all doodle breeds, a Bernedoodle requires frequent grooming, moderate exercise and plenty of attention.

Depending on your dog’s specific coat, they will need to be brushed daily or every other day to prevent mating of the fur. They also need trips to the groomer every 6-8 weeks depending on your at-home maintenance routine.

Bernedoodles require moderate exercise, or a minimum 30 minutes of active time. This can include walks (once they are fully vaccinated) or active games like fetch or tug of war.

Bernedoodles love their people. They want nothing more than to spend time with you. Make sure you set aside time to give your dog lots of attention. Between walks, watching TV on the couch together and training exercises, your Bernedoodle wants to spend as much time with you as possible.
